LAMVCF Community Roundtable Scholarship

Overview:

MVLA Scholars annually offers need-based, renewable multi-year college scholarships and one-on-one mentoring to graduating seniors of the Mountain View-Los Altos High School District.

Scholarships range from $2,000 - $6,000 per year, depending on the college the student is attending and financial need. 

Grants are renewable annually until college graduation, based on academic progress and performance.

Criteria:

• Attend either Los Altos High or Mountain View High
• Have financial need
• Minimum GPA 2.75
• Plan to attend college full-time (may also be working part-time)
• Preference is given to students who will be the first generation to attend college

Overview:

The primary mission of Rotary is to promote service above self. 

Rotary Community Service Scholarships funding levels range each year depending upon the total amount available to award and the total out-of-pocket costs expected for the recipient (i.e., scholarships for a student attending community college will typically be lower due to the lower overall costs to attend.) 

The scholarships are one-time awards. 

Los Altos Rotary scholarships are not available to families of Rotarians.

Criteria:
1. Must attend one of the following schools:

• MVLA High School District (including MVLA Adult Ed)
• St. Francis High School

2. Scholarships are evaluated by the following criteria (in order of importance):

• Participation in significant community service
• Minimum grade point average of 3.0
• Financial need

Overview:

Up to seven scholarships will be awarded each year. Scholarships will be $4000 per student and are one-time awards. Qualified candidates will be invited for an interview with a committee of club members.

Criteria:

1. Must attend one of the following schools:

• MVLA High School District (including MVLA Adult Ed)
• Pinewood High School
• St. Francis High School
• Mountain View Academy
• German International School

2. Scholarships are evaluated by the following criteria:

• Significant community service
• Academic achievement which indicates a likelihood of success in college
• Financial Need

3. Applicants for this scholarship should plan to include details of their community service in their statement in this application.

Overview:

Scholarship Mountain View is a scholarship program available to high-achieving high school seniors with financial need seeking to attend college or a trade school.

Criteria:

The criteria for the student applicant are as follows:

• Resident of Mountain View, California
• Senior attending one of our local high schools
• Minimum grade point average of 2.5
• Service: Applicant participates in projects and activities outside the realm of work and formal education or shows a willingness to serve his or her school, friends, family, or community
• Goals & Objectives: Applicant demonstrates that they are developing a sense of purpose in their present life, as well as for the future by setting goals and objectives focused on a career path
• Commitment to furthering their education at a college (2 year or 4 year) or trade school. It is preferred that they have already submitted applications to these institutions.
• Financial Need

The Kiwanis Club of Los Altos Foundation is here to support your journey with our College Scholarship Program!

Criteria:

What’s the deal? We’re offering scholarships to students like you who are planning to enroll at an accredited two or four-year college. This is your chance to make your college dreams come true!

Who are we looking for? We’re seeking students who have shown:

• A spirit of giving back through community service or other selfless acts

• Determination to learn despite financial or other challenges

• Plans to attend an accredited institution within the next year

How does it work? Each scholarship is worth $2,500 and can be used for tuition, fees, books, and other necessary expenses. The funds are spread out over three academic quarters or two semesters. We release the first installment of the money after you have shown us proof of your registration for the first term and thereafter when you’ve shown us your transcript with satisfactory progress for the term just completed and proof of your registration for the next term.

Kiwanis Club of Mountain View's Lizanne M. Verzic Scholarship Overview:

Scholarships are typically $2,500 each and are one-time awards.

Criteria:

1. Must attend one of the following schools or unit:

• MVLA High School District (including MVLA Adult Ed)
• St. Francis High School
• Mountain View Academy
• Mountain View-based Boy Scout or Girl Scout Troop

1. Must fulfill TWO OR MORE of the following criteria (applications will be weighted towards the highest number and quality of the below areas):

• Have done community service during your high school years
• Will be enrolling in college
• Are seeking employment in one of the following five career fields: a) Law Enforcement, b) Firefighting, c) Registered Nursing, Licensed Vocational Nurse, Nurse's Assistant, d) Emergency Medical Services (Paramedic/EMT), or e) Education (K-12 Teacher, early childhood education.
• Currently, have a grade point average of 3.0 or above

1. Optional: Those active in Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, or Key Club may receive special consideration.
2. Applicants for this scholarship will need to provide the following information in the essay section of this application:

• How you will fulfill the areas in number 2 above
• Why do you want to go to college and what personal attributes do you think will help you succeed in college
• Your long-range goals and how college will assist you in reaching those goals.

Overview:

Inspiration for R. Scott Chan Science For Good Scholarship Fund:

Criteria:

This scholarship fund was established in honor and memory of R. Scott Chan, a dedicated and respected high school physics teacher who chose the teaching profession as a second career after an initial career as a hardware engineer.

Scott was passionate about making science relevant in the lives of his students and took his profession as a teacher very seriously and with great care. He also was keenly aware of the application of science to resolving a wide range of challenges facing the world. 

Eligibility: 

• Graduating High School seniors who have been accepted to a 2-year or 4-year college and plan to major in a science or engineering discipline.
• Eligible students must be enrolled in Carlmont High School, American High School, Mountain View High School, or Westmont High School. 
• This is a needs-based scholarship; financial information must be submitted to provide evidence of financial need. 

This scholarship is for students who plan on majoring in Physical, Life, Earth, or Computer Sciences or a multi-disciplinary major that includes science, or Engineering, with an emphasis on pursuing a career aimed at resolving major environmental and health challenges confronting our world. 

In the essay and throughout the application, the applicant should provide compelling evidence of an understanding of how the application of science, technology, and/or engineering can help resolve humanitarian, health, environmental, and global climate change challenges. This is very important as often more lucrative jobs are available, particularly in the engineering field, that are not focused on resolving significant challenges our world faces. 

To be considered for this scholarship you will need:

1. Two (2) letters of recommendation, at least one of whom is a science teacher.
2. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is needed to qualify through the online application process. If your GPA is below 3.0 but you would still like to be considered, please send a request along with your GPA and an explanation of your academic path to Vicki Moore and
3. Short essay (up to 800 words) comprised of a personal statement about the applicant's personal history and goals, employment, extracurricular activities, community service, overcoming obstacles, and any awards or honors. Explain how attending college will help you reach your goals. 

Grant Amounts: 

Grants will range from $1,500-$7,000 based on need. Smaller grants will be focused on providing support for community college students. 

First-year college students in good standing may apply for the second year of scholarship funds after providing a report on their progress after completing their Freshman year. 

Post Grantee reporting requirement: 

Grantees shall provide a short description of the progress he/she has made toward the scholarship goals and a copy of the transcript after the Freshman and Sophomore (if a second-year scholarship is requested) years of college. A report form shall be provided.

Overview:

Dr. Deborah M. Dexter graduated from Mountain View Union High School in 1956. She earned a BA in Biology and an MA in Education from Stanford University.  After finishing her PhD in Zoology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, she went on to become a Professor of Zoology and Biology at San Diego State University.  

Her research, teaching, and curiosity have taken her to places worldwide, including Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East.  She has studied French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, and Thai.  

Criteria:

The Dexter Scholarships celebrate Dr. Dexter’s enthusiasm and dedication to science, her love of languages and travel, and her passionate advocacy of education, especially for those new to the United States.

The Deborah M. Dexter Science Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship awarded to a female MVHS senior who exemplifies excellence in science and exudes curiosity and passion for science. 

The student must have demonstrated the ability to excel in rigorous and advanced science courses. 

• Award amount $2,500. 
• Other Criteria: Minimum 3.5 unweighted 10-12 Academic GPA required. 
• At least 3 years of science completed.

The Deborah M. Dexter Engineering Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship awarded to an MVHS senior who exemplifies excellence in engineering and science. The student must have demonstrated the ability to excel in rigorous and advanced engineering and science courses.

• Award amount $2,500. 
• Other Criteria: Minimum 3.5 unweighted 10-12 Academic GPA required. 
• At least 3 years of science and/or engineering completed.

Deborah M. Dexter Scholarship(s) for New Americans is a combined merit- and need-based scholarship awarded to an MVHS senior who was not born in the U.S., but who is in the process of attaining, has recently attained, or hopes to attain U.S. citizenship. 

The student will have a strong academic work ethic, a high motivation to succeed, a commitment to the community, and compassion for others. 

Country of citizenship is not relevant. 

Award amount: $1,500 
Other Criteria: Minimum 2.5 unweighted 10-12 Academic GPA required. 
Financial need is considered
