OUR MISSION, VISION, AND VALUES

When LAMVCF was started in 1991, the board of directors had many different ideas for the mission of the foundation. However, one thing they all agreed on was the importance of community building.

To that end, the work of Dr. John W. Gardner (1912 -2002), a U.S. Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare, and the founding chairman of Common Cause became critical.

Specifically, Dr. Gardner’s book, On Leadership (1990), which had an entire chapter devoted to building community, became guideposts for the foundation and its philosophy, and continues to have an impact to this day. Dr. Gardner was a valued advisor to the foundation during his time as a Haas Professor of Public Service at Stanford University, and was named an honorary founder for his service.
